The CAPE SHOW HORSE SOCIETY is a registered Section 21 organisatation. The Society is not limited to one particular
breed of horse. Over the years the program has been changed to accommodate every breed and we can proudly say that we are
the only society that comprise of several breeds of horses.
There is no discrimination between race, colour or culture. Competitors are always welcome to compete in the shows and no-one
has been turned away.
ACHIEVEMENTS
In today’s society, our children are easily drawn into the criminal element such as drugs, which is a huge problem amongst the
youth. By involving them in the Society, we can proudly say that many street children and reformed drug addicts have found
peace and serenity with us. Underprivileged people have discovered a place where they are welcome, and even participate.
Young and old alike are welcome to participate. Whether you own a horse or not, the CAPE SHOW HORSE SOCIETY has
always provided for everyone. An example is the additional “Pensioners Class for the over 60’s” where the elderly are compete
against each other. Not to win, but to make them feel young and alive again.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY
The CAPE SHOW HORSE SOCIETY has assisted many sporting bodies in raising funds to further their clubs youth to go
abroad. Another introduction are the handicapped children for whom the CAPE SHOW HORSE SOCIETY has accommodated
in the shows. This is to develop a sense of confidence and pride in them and uplifting their spirits when they are on the arena.
Our members generously offer their horses to these children with an aid, either on the back of the cart or leading the horse with a
rein. Recently we were contacted to be the official procession for King Adam Kok V, a descendant of Adam Kok of The Griqua,
whereby we, on a very short notice, generously arranged for a carriage and top quality SA Saddlers as part of the procession
through the streets of Ceres. All the members, transportation of the horses and carriage and vehicles were volunteers and the
CAPE SHOW HORSE SOCIETY were proud to be part of such an historical event
SPONSORS
As most or all of our members are average working men and women, to organize a successful show we are in desperate need for
SPONSORS. The money that pays for the organizing of the stables, PA systems, arena and stands are income that is raised from
fund raising, but this is not enough to cover all our expenses.
We therefore appeal to you to have a look at what we have to offer to the community and aid us in making a better future for our
children, the needy, the handicapped and most of all to a brighter future and in this way you would contribute to a reduction in
the crime and drugs.
HISTORY
In 1968 under the auspices of the SPCA, one of the first shows were held at Maynard Gardens in Wynberg. Thereafter the horse show to Cape Market where horses that were used to work with, were shown. The shows then moved to Rosebank and the Abattoir in Maitland. In the late 1970’s, the Goodwood Show Grounds became the venue where annual shows were held. Regional, National and International shows were hosted on a quarterly basis by the Club. This was during to the Apartheid era where non whites where not allowed to compete in “whites only horse shows”. Well known figures in the horse industry such as the late Mr. George Cato, Mr. Chris Anthony, Mr Achmat Vallie, the late Mr. Achmat Moerat, Mr. Ismail Brenner and Mr. Bakka Vallie were ex-presidents of the Club and their remarkable contributions and achievements were well appreciated be all horse owners and lovers, not only nationally, but international as well. Horse Owners uplifted the show standards by becoming more experienced with the registered breeds and introduced into the Cape to show at the Club Shows. Some achieved high placings on our National Shows as S.A. Champions. Breeds such as SA Saddlers, Hackneys, Hackney Ponies and Welsh Ponies. With all these well loved quality bred horses stabled on neighboring farms throughout the Western Cape, a show of high a higher caliber was hosted in 1993 at the Goodwood Showgrounds. By introducing stalls from various organizations such as Mosques, Churches and Rugby Clubs, as well as a fun fair to add to the entertainment for the public. This brought on a whole new outlook to the show and also turned out to be great success. A show with a higher standard than our present National Show. Then to our great disappointment, the last show at Goodwood Show Grounds was held. Without a venue to host the show, the club was forced to roam from Worcester and Paarl Showgrounds. Once again due to development, as in the case with the Goodwood Show Grounds, the club roamed the Western Cape, trying to keep as close to Cape Town to accommodate the less fortunate horse lover. The club hosted shows on various sportsfields such as the School of industry in Plantation Road, Lentegeur Sports Field, Vygieskraal and then Chukker Road in Kenwyn, being the home grounds of Violets Rugby Club. The Shows were always well supported and drew large crowds. Unfortunately hosting a horse show is costly as funds were exhausted on temporary stables, rosettes, and the leasing of the grounds from the various entities. But yet the Club, with their passion for horses and the sport, managed to uphold the show.
Returning to Cape Town, the club once again managed to regain the crowd that was once lost at Goodwood Show Grounds which in the interim was developed into a gambling institution, that would lead to poverty and addiction.
The Club comprises of approximately 1000 various breeds of horses, 150 members and over 300 children. As a club, our primary objective is to offer our youth an alternative to drug addiction, crime and gangsterism by introducing them to a sport that demands not only discipline, but also the passion for a horse.
We need to expose this sport to the larger community and stimulate everyone with this lovely creation, the horse. Eventually we will definitely have an ongoing generation who has something to live for. The passion for a horse and a sense of
responsibility.
